Besidespayherstudyalsolookedatthe"glass-ceiling"effect—namelythatatallstagesofawoman’scareersheislesslikelythanhermalecolleaguestobepromoted.Betweenpostdoctoralandlecturerlevelmenaremorelikelytobepromotedthanwomenarebyafactorofbetween1.04and2.45.Suchdifferencesarebiggerathighergradeswiththehardestmoveofallbeingforawomantosettleintoaprofessorialchair.
