CMinoritychildrenoftenencounterracismintheirdailylivesandthosewhoexperiencediscriminationmoreoftenhavesymptomsofdepressionaccordingtoastudytobepresentedSundayMay2atthePediatricAcademicSocietiesPASannualmeetinginVancouverCanada."Unfortunatelyminoritychildrenperceivediscriminationoftenintheirlives"saidLeeM.Pachterco-authorofthestudy."Fifty-fiveyearsafterBrownv.BoardofEducationandtheCivilRightsMovementracismisstillcomnlonintheirlives."Dr.Pachterandhiscolleaguessurveyed277minoritychildrenaged9-18todeterminethecontextsinwhichtheyperceiveracismandtherelationshipbetweendiscriminationdepressionandselfesteem.Participantsfilledoutquestionnairesincluding23scenariosinwhichtheymightwitnessdisciminationsuchasbeingfollowedbyastoresecurityguardgettingpoorserviceinarestaurantorbeingaccusedofdoingsomethingwrongatschool.Abouttwo-thirdsofthechildrenwereLatinoorAfricanAmericanand19percentweremultiracial.Resultsshowedthat88percenthadatleastoneexperiencewithracismandnearly12pereenthadexperiencedracialdiscriminationinatleasthalfofthesituationsdescribedinthesurvey.Themostcommonformsofdiscriminationwereracialremarksbeingcalledinsultingnamesandbeingfollowedbysecurityguardsinstores.ExperiencesweresimilarforLafinosandAfricanAmcricansboysandgirlsandyoungerandolderchildren."Notonlydomostminoritychildrenexperiencediscriminationbuttheyexperienceitinmultiplecontexts:inschoolsinthecommunitywithadultsandwithpeers."Dr.Pachtersaid."It’skindofliketheelephantinthecomeroftheroomametaphorforanysubjectmatterthatistaboocomplexanddebatable.It’stherebutnobodyreallytalksaboutit.Anditmayhavesignificantmentalandphysicalhealthconsequencesinthesechildren’slives."ResearchersalsodeliveredtheChildDepressionInventoryandtheRosenbergSelfEsteemQuestionnaireto52minoritychildren.Theyfoundasignificantrelationbetweenperceivedracismanddepressionself-esteemanddepressionbutnotbetweenracismandself-esteem.ThenextstepistolookatwhetherdiscriminationcreatesstressthatleadstoracialinequalitiesinphysicalandmentalhealthDr.Pachtersaid.
