TheRepublicanshoweverdecryeventhemodestgraduatedtaxincreasesinthePresident’sprogram.Theywanttaxcutsandamoreopenmarket.TheysayifFederalmoneyhastobeinjectedintotheeconomyletitthroughdefencespending. Boththesealternativesignoretheuniquenatureoftheeconomicproblembeforeus.Itisnotsimplyamatterofmarketsorfinancing.Thenewtechnologyallowsvastlyincreasedproductionforthoseabletomasterit.Butitalsothreatensthosewhofailtoadoptitwithpermanentsecondclasscitizenshipintheworldeconomy.Ifanindustrycannotleveritselfuptotheleadingstageoftechnologicaladvancesthenitwillnotbeabletocompeteeffectively.Ifitcannotdothisnoamountofgovernmentprotectionismoraccesstoforeignmarketscankeepitprofitableforlong.Withouttheprofitsandexperienceoftechnologicalexcellencetoreinvestthatindustrycanonlyfallstillfurtherbehinditsforeigncompetitors. SothecruxisthetechnologyandthatiswherethePresident’sprogramfocused.Thedangerisnotthataplanwillnotbepasseditisthattheideologuesofrightandleftwilldistortthebillwithamendmentsthatwillbluritsfocusontechnology.Theeconomicrestructuringplanshouldbepassedintact.Ifwefailtorestructureoureconomynowwemaynotgetasecondchance.
