ETheestablishmentoftheThirdReichinfluencedeventsinAmericanhistorybystartingachainofeventswhichculminatedinwarbetweenGermanyandtheUnitedStates.ThecompletedestructionofdemocracythepersecutionofJewsthewaronreligionthecrueltyandbarbarismoftheNazisandespeciallytheplansofGermanyandheralliesItalyandJapanforworldconquestcausedgreatindignationinthiscountryandbroughtonfearofanotherworldwar.WhilespeakingoutagainstHitler’satrocitiestheAmericanpeoplegenerallyfavoredisolationistpoliciesandneutrality.TheNeutralityActsof1935and1936prohibitedtradewithanybelligerentsorloanstothem.In1937thePresidentwasempoweredtodeclareanarmsembargoinwarsbetweennationsathisdiscretion.AmericanopinionbegantochangesomewhatafterPresidentRoosevelt’squarantinetheaggressorspeechatChicago1937inwhichheseverelycriticizedHitler’spolicies.Germany’sseizureofAustriaandtheMunichPactforthepartitionofCzechoslovakia1938alsoarousedtheAmericanpeople.TheconquestofCzechoslovakiainMarch1939wasanotherrudeawakeningtothemenaceoftheThirdReich.InAugust1939cametheshockoftheNazi-SovietPactandinSeptembertheattackonPolandandtheoutbreakofEuropeanwar.TheUnitedStatesattemptedtomaintainneutralityinspiteofsympathyforthedemocraciesarrayedagainsttheThirdReich.TheNeutralityActof1939repealedthearmsembargoandpermittedcashandcarryexportsofarmstobelligerentnations.Astrongnationaldefenseprogramwasbegun.Adraftactwaspassed1940tostrengthenthemilitaryservices.ALendAct1941authorizedthePresidenttosellexchangeorlendmaterialstoanycountrydeemednecessarybyhimforthedefenseoftheUnitedStates.HelpwasgiventoBritainbyexchangingcertainoveragedestroyersfortherighttoestablishAmericanbasesinBritishterritoryintheWesternHemisphere.InAugust1940PresidentRooseveltandPrimeMinisterChurchillmetandissuedtheAtlanticCharterwhichproclaimedthekindofaworldwhichshouldbeestablishedafterthewar.InDecember1941JapanlaunchedtheunprovokedattackontheUnitedStatesatPearlHarbor.ImmediatelythereafterGermanydeclaredwarontheUnitedStates.TheAmericanPolicyduringtheyears1935--1936maybedescribedasbeing______.
