WhetherornotEnglishistheofficiallanguageoftheUnitedStatesitremainsthe"languageofwidercommunication".NearlyeveryonerecognizestheneedtodevelopproficiencyinEnglishinordertodowellinAmerica.TohelpthosewhowanttobrushupontheirEnglishskillsEnglishasaSecondLanguageESLclassesaround.CitieswithlargenumbersofrecentimmigrantsoftensetupbilingualeducationprogramstoteachstudentscontentsubjectsintheirnativelanguagewhiletheyimprovetheirEnglish.Languageeducatorsoftenhavestronganddivergentviewsastowhichapproachhelpslearnersachievebetterresults:abilingualapproachanESLapproachorevenapureimmersion"sinkorswim"approach.Howeveralltheseteachersshareacommoncommitment:tohelpstudentsfunctionwellinEnglish.
