ActuallythoughAmericathelandofimmigrantshasalwayshadpeopleofmanydifferentnationalitiesandlanguages.The1990censusindicatesthatalmost14%ofAmericansspeakanonEnglishlanguageathome.Yetonly3%reportedthattheyspokeEnglishnotwellornotatall.Thatmeansthatslightlymorethanoneoutof10Americanscouldbeconsideredbilingual.Besidesthatmanyhighschoolcollegestudentsandevensomeelementaryschoolstudentsarerequiredtotakeaforeignlanguageasapartoftheircurriculum.InadditiontooldstandbyslikeSpanishGermanandFrenchmoreandmorestudentsareoptingforEasternEuropeanandAsianlanguages.Ofcoursenotallstudentskeepuptheirforeignlanguageabilities.AstheoldsayinggoesIfyoudon’tuseit.ButstillagrowingnumberofAmericansarecomingtoappreciatethebenefitsofbeingmultilingual.EthnicenclavesfoundparticularlyinmajormetropolitancentershavepreservedthelanguageandcultureofAmericanimmigrants.SomelocalresidentscanfunctionquitewellintheirnativelanguagewithouthavingtobotherlearningEnglish.RegionssuchassouthernFloridaandtheSouthwesthavenumerousSpanishspeakingneighborhoods.InfactSpanishspeakers—numberingover17million—composethelargestnonEnglishlinguisticgroupinAmerica.ButChineseVietnameseItalianPolishandmanyotherethnicgroupaddtothelinguisticflavorofAmerica.Foreignlanguagesaresocommonlyusedinsomeethnicneighborhoodsthatvisitorsmightthinktheyareinanothercountry!AlthoughsomeAmericanswelcomethislinguisticandculturaldiversityothershavebeguntofearthattheEnglishlanguageisbeingthreatened.Sincethe1980stheEnglishOnlymovementhassoughttopromotelegislationwhichwouldestablishEnglishastheofficiallanguageandrestricttheuseofnonEnglishlanguage.HoweversomegroupsincludingTESOLtheorganizationforTeachersofEnglishtoSpeakersofOtherLanguageobjecttosuchlanguagerestrictionism.TheirviewknownasEnglishPlussuggeststhatAmericansshouldhaverespectforpeople’snativelanguageandhelpthemfitintothemainstreamofsociety.Butsofar19stateshavepassedEnglishOnlylegislationandthetopicisthefocusofanongoingdebate.WhetherornotEnglishistheofficiallanguageoftheUnitedStatesitremainsthelanguageofwidercommunication.NearlyeveryonerecognizestheneedtodevelopproficiencyinEnglishinordertodowellinAmerica.TohelpthosewhowanttobrushupontheirEnglishskillsEnglishasaSecondLanguageESLclassesaround.CitieswithlargenumbersofrecentimmigrantsoftensetupbilingualeducationprogramstoteachstudentscontentsubjectsintheirnativelanguagewhiletheyimprovetheirEnglish.Languageeducatorsoftenhavestronganddivergentviewsastowhichapproachhelpslearnersachievebetterresults:abilingualapproachanESLapproachorevenapureimmersionsinkorswimapproach.Howeveralltheseteachersshareacommoncommitment:tohelpstudentsfunctionwellinEnglish.AmericansrecognizethatEnglishistheinternationallanguageandpeoplewithgoodEnglishskillscangetbyinmanyinternationalsettings.Ontheotherhandinaworldgrowingincreasinglysmallersecondlanguageskillscanbeagreatfavor.Theycanbuildcrossculturalbridgesandgivepeopleanedgeinavarietyofcareerfield.Indeedlackofforeignlanguageproficiencycanlimitone’schancesforadvancementandkeeponeinaculturaldeadendstreet.AsmanypeopleinAmericaarediscoveringbeingmonolingualisnolaughingmatter.______composethelargestlinguisticgroupinAmerica.
