Forinstanceinsteadofdependingonlargelyineffectivelawsagainstpoachingitgiveslocalpeopleagoodeconomicreasontopreserveplantsandanimals.InZimbabwethereisasustainablemanagementprojectelephants.Foreigntouristspaylargesumsofmoneytokilltheseanimalsforsport.Thismoneyisthengiventotheinhabitantsoftheareawherethehuntingtakesplace.Intheorylocalswillbeencouragedtoprotectelephantsinsteadofpoachingthem—orallowingotherstopoachthem—becauseoftheeconomicbenefitinvolved. Thissoundslikeasensiblestrategybutitremainstobeseenwhetheritwillwork.Withcorruptionendemicinmanydevelopingcountriessomeobserversareskepticalthatthemoneywillactuallyreachthepeopleitisintendedfor.Otherswonderhoweffectivethelocalswillbeatstoppingpoachers. Therearealsoquestionsaboutwhethersustainablemanagementispracticalwhenitcomestoprotectingareasofgreat-bio-diversitysuchastheworld’stropicalforests.Intheorytheprincipleshouldbethesameaswithelephants—allowloggingcompaniestocutdownacertainnumberoftreesbutnotsomanyastocompletelydestroytheforest. Sustainablemanagementofforestsrequirescontrolsonthenumberoftreeswhicharecutdownaswellasinvestmentinreplacingthem.Butbecausealmostalltropicalforestsarelocatedincountrieswhichdesperatelyneedrevenuefromloggingtherearefewregulationstodothis.Moreoverunrestrictedloggingissomuchmoreprofitablethatwoodpricesfrommanagedforestswouldcostuptofivetimesmore—anincreasethatconsumersnomatterhow"green"areunlikelytopay. Forthesereasonssustainablemanagementoftropicalforestsisunlikelytobecomewidespreadinthenearfuture.Thisisdishearteningnews.It’sestimatedtheseforestscontainanythingfrom50to90percentofallanimalandplantspeciesonEarth.Inonestudyofafive-square-kilometerareaofrainforestinPeruforinstancescientistscounted1300speciesofbutterflyand600speciesofbird.IntheentirecontinentalUnitedStatesonly400speciesofbutterflyand700speciesofbirdhavebeenrecorded.
