Itisnotdifficulttoimagineaworldstrippedofambition.Itwouldprobablybeakinderworld:withoutdemandsanddisappointments.Peoplewouldhavetimeforreflection.Suchworkastheydidwouldnotbeforthemselvesbutforthecollectivity.Competitionwouldneverenterin.Conflictwouldbeeliminatedtensionbecomeathingofthepast.Thestressofcreationwouldbeatanend.Thefamilywouldbecomesuperfluousasasocialunitwithallitsformerpowerforbringingaboutneurosisdrainedaway.Longevitywouldbeincreasedforfewerpeoplewoulddieofheartattackorstrokecausedbyconfusedendeavor.Anxietywouldbeextinct.Timewouldstretchonandonwithambitionlongdepartedfromthehumanheart. Wedonotchooseourparentsourhistoricalepochthecountryofourbirthortheimmediatecircumstancesofourupbringing.Wedonotmostofuschoosetodie;nordowechoosethetimeorconditionsofourdeath.Butwithinallthisrealmofchoicelessnesswedochoosehowweshalllive:courageouslyorincowardicehonorablyordishonorablywithpurposeorindrift.Wedecidewhatisimportantandwhatistrivialinlife.Wedecidethatwhatmakesussignificantiseitherwhatwedoorwhatwerefusetodo.Butnomatterhowindifferenttheuniversemaybetoourchoicesanddecisionsthesechoicesanddecisionsareourstomake.Wedecide.Wechoose.Andaswedecideandchoosesoareourlivesformed.Intheendformingourowndestinyiswhatambitionisabout.
