李宗质出生后因战乱母子失散，长达后曾四处寻访母亲下落而不得，以至茶饭不思，黯然神伤。
作者杨万里素来仰慕李台州至孝之名，但直到李台州去世之后，才写作此文，并在士大夫中传颂其事迹。
为一位官员作传，不注重其政治事功，却记叙其寻母尽孝之事，杨万里有褒扬孝道，规劝世风之意。
文章记李台州事迹，以寻母、认母，侍母为线索，集中笔墨描写认母场景，详略得当，主次分明。
