ItisaneathypothesisbutisittrueAstudypublishedinthismonth’sissueoftheJournalofPersonalityandSocialPsychologysuggestsitmightbe.CarstenWroschfromConcordiaUniversityinMontrealandGregoryMilleroftheUniversityofBritishColumbiastudieddepressioninteenagegirls.Theirconclusionwasthatthosewhoexperiencedmilddepressivesymptomscouldindeeddisengagemoreeasilyfromunreachablegoals.ThatsupportsDr.Nesse’shypothesis.48Butthenewstudyalsofoundaremarkablecorollary:thosegirlswhocoulddisengagefromtheunattainableprovedlesslikelytosuffermoreseriousdepressioninthelongrun.
